Blowin’ Smoke has moved locations and is now open becoming an instant neighborhood Cantina favorite. With no advertising at all about their re-opening people find themself walking in to have a meal at this great outdoor location. I was lucky enough to be one of the first to realize this place was open and serving to the public, being that I only live a few blocks away and pass by almost on a daily basis.

I make my way over to notice the nicely remodeled location with art on the floor, new comfortable patio furniture and a local band playing music. As I am looking through the menu everything sounds appetising, from the sliders to the tacos and many items in the appetizer menu, so what do I do, I order a nice sample of the menu so I can get a good idea for each dish.

Because you can’t have BBQ without beer, of course I order a beer and decide ont eh pulled pork sliders and a fish taco. To my disappointment they were out of pulled pork. I didn’t think this was a big deal because they had just opened and it is very easy to miscalculates during your first few days. I went ahead and ordered the Brisket slider instead.

The food took a while to get back to us, I was very glad to have ordered a beer and the queso with chorizo dip as an appetizer. Finally, our food get there and it is really good, great sliders very well-flavored brisket and the fish tacos are nicely enhances with simple and fresh ingredients such as pineapple salsa. I finished the two in no time seriously considering ordering more but did not because I knew I’d have to wait a long time for it to arrive and so decided not too.

Being well aware that the first few days of opening a restaurant are going to have a few kinks to work though I decided to go back a week later to try the rest of the menu and hoping they had not run out of pulled pork.

it was evident that the word had gone around about Blowin’ Smokes new location, arriving at the restaurant there was a wait to get seated of about 30-45 minutes, which is never a problem because time seems to fly when you are with a good group of people, and I was.

Once seated the first thing I asked is, “does the kitchen have pulled pork this evening?” and yes they did. We decided to have pulled pork sliders, a Smoked poblano pepper, queso dip with chorizo (yes, again) a few tacos, and the flintstone rib.

The first thing to arrive to the table was the queso dip, but it unfortunately arrived with out the chorizo. The waiter was notified of the mistake but some where along other tables and orders he never remembered to bring back the correct order, and so we had to settle and eat out queso dip without chorizo.

The Smoked poblano Pepper took a while longer to arrive after our first appetizer, once it arrived it was cold. I am sure that if the pepper would arrive warm to the table it would be a wonderful appetizer since it has great ingredients, stuffed with smoked pork, and queso fresco but we all know that with such ingredients the temperature really does matter.

It takes some time but rest of the food arrives. The flintstone beef rib is HUGE it can easily be shared by two people. Its flavor was smoked and it was very tender, very juice, a very good rib.

All in all my 3 experiences in this place was a bit disappointing, although the food is great when it arrives toy our table warm. The food does take longer than usual to get to your table, same issue with the drinks. Will I try this place again? Yes, hoping the restaurant flow improves.

Savannah Italian Restaurant

Oliva Restaurant & Bar is now open at 10 Whitaker St., just south of the new beer garden at Moon River Brewing Co. and just across the street from the entrance to the underground parking garage.

Operated locally by two Savannah residents and great entrepreneurs, Oliva will be giving good news for anyone who like Italian food and Jazz lovers. Jody Espina’s jazz trio will be appearing sometimes for sets at Oliva. Despite a plethora of downtown restaurants, there are only a couple spots that specialize in Italian.

Oliva is a spacious, gracious interior with exposed brick and big windows. The first level features an open kitchen and a variety of seating options. The bar is upstairs, along with tables for dozens more.

The short stretch of Whitaker Street between Bay and Broughton streets has certainly fostered an interesting collection of businesses, despite the narrowness of the sidewalks and the general starkness of the streetscape. As I’ve noted here before, the lanes on Whitaker are much wider than necessary. A couple of additional feet added to the sidewalks on both sides of the street would boost business and create chances for beautification.

Tybee Bar & Grill

Welcome to Nickie’s 1971 Restaurant and Lounge on Tybee Island, Ga. Nick Alexander built this building back in 1970 from the ground up, and in the following year opened Nickie’s Lounge for business. Nick, as the founding owner and operator, established a successful, well beloved, and legendary gathering spot here on Tybee Island, which for the next 20 years was well known by locals and tourist alike as “Nickie’s Lounge”.

In about 1990, Nick sold the property, and for the next 21 years the building housed a variety of diverse businesses under various names, and changed hands numerous times, but few of their ventures ever lasted more than a single season or two.

So in the winter of 2010, at the age of 89 years old, Nick Alexander bought the property back, and along with an additional $100,000 of remodeling and reconstruction, he once again christened it with the name of which it was born; Nickie’s.. And for this reprise, and in honor of it’s original birth, Nick then elaborated and expanded that name to be Nickie’s 1971.

The grand re-opening took place in October 2010, and once again this establishment has resumed in experiencing a strong insurgence of consistent and satisfied customers, who are provided a premium quality menu; with full service available to both the family diner in front, as well as to our casual, comfortably classed full service lounge located in the back.

Wilmington Island Chinese Restaurant

Traditional Cantonese, Szechaun, and Hunan style Chinese take out or dine in options. Large menu selection and lunch specials.

Review from Yelp:

This is a hole-in-the-strip-mall family-run Chinese take-out spot. Located on Wilmington Island in the Kroger shopping center, they’ve established themselves by serving reasonably priced American-Chinese dishes made with consistently fresh ingredients.
The hot and sour soup is delicious. The egg drop soup, shrimp with broccoli, the tofu dishes, the luncheon specials, all good.
They don’t deliver, and don’t speak English very well, but don’t vary in their quality.
Is it the highest-end Chinese food you’ve ever eaten? No.
Is it the best Chinese food on the islands? Yes.
Highly recommended. -Doug S.

Tybee Island Pizza Delivery

Established in 1985, by Paul Baker, Pizza on Wheels has been the Number one go to restaurant for subs, salads, and pizza for going on 28 years. Paul Baker passed away in 2000 and ever since his son Yan Baker decide he was going to keep the family legacy alive.

The restaurant uses nothing but the best of quality products, to bring its customers the most amazing pizza that they have ever consumed!!

Voted Best Pizza on Tybee from Tybee Breeze.

Ingredients are fresh daily.

Absolutely wonderful customer service.

Review from Tripadvisor:

One night during our vacation I looked out the window and say the Pizza On Wheels sign. I was pregnant and instantly needed pizza. When the pizza was delivered, the man was very friendly. This pizza was honestly the best pizza I’ve had. The wings were great, too. It was so good we ordered a second time during our vacation. The man remembered delivering to us, thanked us for ordering from them again, and invited us to do so in the future if we ever come back. The pizza was as amazing the second time around. We have decided that when we go back, the first meal we eat will be delivered by Pizza On Wheels.

Savannah Italian Restaurant

We opened Bella’s Italian Cafe 20 years ago partly of necessity;

Fioré Italian Bar and Grill is totally a labor of love.

For some time now we have wanted to expand on our idea for a comfortable, welcoming Italian-American “trattoria” serving honest food at reasonable prices. Italian food offers so many wonderful choices. Fioré allows us the chance to expand what we offer in a new atmosphere.

We have found Habersham Village to be perfect for Bella’s. We have been looking at Sandfly for years and get a similar neighborhood feel, but with its own special character.

Here we have allowed ourselves to explore our imaginations to offer new choices in an exciting atmosphere.

We hope that Bella’s and now Fioré will continue to delight your culinary whim.

Joyce and Jim

Review from Tripadvisor:

Fiore is a new sister restaurant to Bella’s in Savannah, and offers some of the same items on the menu. Located in Sandfly at the Norwood Plaza, this restaurant moved into a section of the Plaza that had previously been a restaurant, although the interior has been very nicely renovated. Access to the restaurant has been changed. Previously you entered from the parking area, now you enter from the side of the building, which provides a nicer setting and appearance when entering. An outside seating area is also new and well done. An all day menu is offered, mainly sandwiches, burgers, Panini’s and salads, and a dinner menu that offers more traditional entrees. There were four of us for dinner celebrating by sister-in-law’s birthday. For appetizers, we shared Steamed Mussels and Caprese Skewers with Basil and Oil. The Mussels were excellent, tender and sweet in a very nice broth, and there almost enough for meal. Placed on four toothpicks were tasty slices of Cherry tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil and served in a small glass. Olive oil had been dripped over the skewers. My wife ordered the Cedar Planked Wild Salmon with Balsamic Honey Glaz and Creamy Parmesan Polenta. Two of ordered “Create Your Own Pasta Meal”. You specify the type of pasta, sauce and additional items you want, such as sausage, seafood, bacon, etc. One meal was with pesto and prosciutto bits and the other was tomato sauce and sausage slices. The pesto meal was excellent and the tomato meal with sausage was good, but the sauce was a little too thick. The last meal was Braised Beef Sirloin with Portobello Gravy along with Penne pasta, which was good. Fiore bread sticks are the same as Bella’s, served with a tomato sauce and flavored buttered, and are excellent. Although very reasonable prices, if there is anything lacking with Fiore it is the limited wine list. We usually judge a restaurant by the simple question of whether we would return for another meal: all four of us said we would be back. Overall, a very nice addition to Savannah’s restaurant scene and worth a visit.

Savannah Ice Cream Shop

Review from Yelp:

In the atmosphere of a classic ice cream parlor, twenty four flavors of ice cream beckon you to stick your head in each barrel until you’re thoroughly sated. Alas, it would perhaps be prudent to judiciously try flavors one or two at a time.

The “Etcetera” part of the restaurant name refers to some delicious sandwiches, smoothies, and drinks on the menu. This is also an excellent place to grab a drink or some bottled water and relax during your time touring through Savannah. -Mick D.

Zaxby’s also offers three salads, or Zalads: The House, The Blue and The Caesar. All of Zaxby’s Zalads offer more chicken, unique ingredients, such as French-fried onions, fresh veggies and juicy tomatoes, and are larger than most salads offered elsewhere. Each is prepared with chicken, three kinds of lettuce and a variety of toppings. Zalads are assembled at the time the order is placed, versus being pre-made and stored in a cooler.

Additionally, Zaxby’s offers Milkshakes which come in chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavors. They are rich and creamy, hand-blended, and are topped with whipped cream.

Review from Yelp:

At the suggestion of my computer “foodie’ friend, who always knows about the latest and greatest in local cuisine, I i stopped by this new place downtown, for a quick bite during a lunch break. he told me to look for the movie marquee? that sounded strange, but I realized when I got there, what he meant, the restaurant used to be a theatre and still has the sign marquee outside, so easy to find. I had the Blue Crab, goat cheese stuffed jalapeno pepper appetizer. Yummy !! I would never have thought of those ingredients in that combination – but it was awesome !! Anything with goat cheese, chevre, i’m ready to devour ! Large portions, i could have shared the appetizer but DID NOT the jalapenos were huge. Nice couple owns the restaurant, and they came out to make sure everything was fine. Definitely recommend and look forward to going back and checking out the full lunch menu as well as the dinner selections. -Scott W.
